Don’t Fumble Cancer Research: Tailgate for Tomorrow’s Cures at UAB-Alabama State Kickoff Game

Thursday Event Media Advisory

August 26, 2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is kicking off the football season by bringing the fight against cancer to game day with a Tailgate for Tomorrow’s Cures during UAB’s first game versus Alabama State on August 28. We invite the community to join.

The tailgate will give researchers and other cancer advocates from around Alabama a place to send a clear message to Congress not to fumble cancer research at this crucial time. Members of Congress are preparing to vote for funding for institutions like UAB. Alabama has $380 million in National Institutes of Health funding at stake. The NIH funds 4,400 jobs in Alabama and fosters nearly $1 billion in economic activity in the state. ACS CAN has also placed billboards in Birmingham and Montgomery calling on Congress to avoid funding cuts.

We will have advocates available for interviews. Advocates will also travel to Washington, D.C. in coming weeks to meet with Alabama lawmakers in Congress.
