Missouri Medicaid Expansion Lawsuit
The state of Missouri enacted Medicaid expansion through a public ballot initiative that amended the state constitution. The change would allow an additional 275,000 individuals access to MO Health Net. The Missouri Department of Social Services refused to provide the coverage, claiming the expansion violated a separate provision of the Missouri constitution. Individual patients sued to enforce their right to be enrolled in MO Health Net in the case of Doyle v. Tidball. The issue went to the Missouri Supreme Court, where ACS CAN joined an amicus brief highlighting the vital role that the implementation of expanded eligibility for Medicaid would have in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Missourians.
In a unanimous decision, the Missouri Supreme Court upheld the patients’ ability to enroll in Medicaid under the new constitutional provision.
