West Virginia’s Legislature Chose Big Tobacco Over West Virginians
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is disappointed that lawmakers chose Big Tobacco over the health of West Virginians in the state budget.
Statement from American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Government Relations Director Leo Almeida
COLUMBUS, OHIO – “Today, Gov. DeWine vetoed HB 513, which would have restricted the authority of communities to pass local laws regulating the sale of tobacco products that are stronger than state law. Local control over matters designed to protect the public’s health, including tobacco control laws, has numerous benefits that would have been lost if local power had been taken away.
“The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) celebrates Gov. DeWine for standing up for the health of Ohioans with this veto. It is important for the local, state and federal levels of government to work together to implement policies to protect the public’s health. It’s through working together that we save lives.
“ACS CAN looks forward to working with the general assembly and the governor to reduce the burden of tobacco on Ohioans. ACS CAN will be advocating for an increase of funding for tobacco prevention and cessation to $20.3 million.”
