Washington, D.C., – Cathy Peters was recognized by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) this week in honor of her exceptional work advocating for cancer-fighting public policies.
ACS CAN presents the award to a staff person who has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in the areas of advocacy and public policy. The award is named in honor of longtime ACS CAN State and Local Campaigns Director, David Woodmansee, who passed away in 2019.
“Cathy is an exceptional advocate who has made a real impact in furthering ACS CAN’s mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone,” said Lisa Lacasse, president of ACS CAN. “For more than 27 years, Peters been a driving force in our advocacy initiatives and inspires those around her to push onward in the fight against cancer. She is admired and valued by colleagues across the country for not only her impressive track record as a patient advocate, but for her steady leadership and sense of compassion. Cathy is very deserving of this recognition that honors our beloved late colleague, Dave Woodmansee.”
Peters’ nationwide portfolio focuses exclusively on access to care, a demanding area that includes health insurance reform, non-comprehensive plans, breast and cervical cancer policies and appropriations, quality of life, network adequacy, surprise billing, telemedicine, vaccine policy, paid family and medical leave, and most recently biomarkers. She also has long served as the State and Local team’s lead on all prescription drug issues.
Beyond her exceptional policy expertise and strategic vision, Peters’ approach to the work sets her apart. She exudes grace and dignity in every interaction. Deeply dedicated, trustworthy, and collaborative by nature, she values and empowers field teams, creates space for open dialogue and creative solutions, and consistently supports her colleagues in delivering their best work. The award was presented on Sept. 13 as part of the annual ACS CAN Leadership Summit and Lobby Day. More than 750 cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones met with their elected officials and urged them to prioritize cancer research and prevention programs, along with other proven cancer-fighting policies, highlighting the real-life impact these investments have on patients, families and communities nationwide.
