ACS CAN Comments on HHS Interoperability Standards and Prior Authorization for Drugs Proposed Rule

On June 15, 2026, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) submitted comments to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the Interoperability Standards and Prior Authorization for Drugs Proposed Rule. 

We offered comments on the following proposals:

  • Interoperability Standards for Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
  • Electronic Prior Authorization for Drugs
  • Improving Communications and Decision Timeframes for Prior Authorizations
  • Requirements for Issuers That Offer Small Group Market Qualified Health Plans on the Federally-facilitated Small Business Health Options Program Exchanges
  • Updates to Patient Access, Provider Directory, Provider Access, and Payer-to-Payer APIs; API Usage Metrics
  • Requests for Information: Step Therapy
  • Requests for Information: Laboratory Tests and Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies Items

ACS CAN also developed a one pager on prior authorization and its impact on cancer patients.
