Road Map to a Cure

September 24, 2012

This week, researchers released important findings that might change the way doctors will look at and treat breast cancer ξin the future.

Thanks to the NIH-funded Cancer Genome Atlas , researchers are beginning to find characteristics for genetic changes to certain cancers, including breast cancer. As Dr. Matthew Ellis of Washington University, a researcher for the study says, Š—“This is the road map for how we might cure breast cancer in the future.Š—

This is an encouraging step in the road to finding a cure, but once again proves that as Members of Congress work to draft a budget for 2013, they must keep research like this in mind and protect cancer research funding through the National Institute of Health. If they donŠ—Èt, breakthroughs like this one wonŠ—Èt reach their potential, and the road map to better treating breast cancer and other cancers will be lost.
