Nomination Procedure

Nominations must be submitted no later than Thursday, July 27, 2023. 

An ACS CAN volunteer-led workgroup will select the award winner(s) from among the nominees in accordance with the nomination criteria.

Award Purpose

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) presents the Volunteer Award for Excellence in Advocacy each year to an exemplary volunteer or volunteers in recognition of outstanding leadership and longtime, continuous service in advocacy and public policy.

Nomination Criteria 

Nominees should be current ACS CAN members who have consistently demonstrated leadership in several of the following areas:

  • Service within ACS CAN as a State Lead Ambassador, ACT Lead or other advocacy volunteer position
  • Member or leader of a grassroots network or public policy committee at the regional and/or national level of ACS CAN, American Cancer Society and/or another organization whose goals are aligned with ACS CAN
  • Relay For Life® (RFL) advocacy chair/RFL advocacy committee
  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) advocacy chair/MSABC advocacy committee
  • Participant in local, state or federal coalitions that promote ACS CAN's advocacy and public policy agenda
  • Leadership role in a state Cancer Action Day
  • Development of volunteer advocacy best practices
  • Advocating ACS CAN and Society positions before a state legislature or Congress
  • Volunteer leadership in recruiting, promoting and involving other advocates
  • Other volunteer leadership activity in support of advocacy and public policy
