ACS CAN Encouraged to See Lawmakers Taking Action 
 

The Delaware legislature has passed HS 1 of HB 302, becoming just the 8^th state to take action to enhance coverage of prostate cancer screenings for high-risk men. The bill would eliminate cost-sharing for these lifesaving screenings, thus reducing barriers and increasing access to prostate cancer screenings for men over 40 who meet certain risk factors. The legislation awaits Governor Carney’s consideration. Advocates with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and ZERO Prostate Cancer are urging the governor to deliver a win to men across Delaware and sign the bill as soon as possible.

Today, Governor Shapiro signed House Bill 1754 into law, securing a major win for patients across Pennsylvania. The new law will require all state-regulated health plans, including Medicaid, to cover comprehensive biomarker testing, which will enable more Pennsylvanians to access biomarker testing that can open the door to precision medicine. Targeted treatment can lead to fewer side effects, improved survival, better quality of life and potentially lower costs for patients facing cancer and other serious illnesses.  

Earlier today, Governor Cooper and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that the state plans to relieve as much as $4 billion in medical debt for an estimated two million North Carolinians. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) joins patient advocates and public health organizations across the state in applauding this investment in North Carolina, its people and their health.

Today, the Supreme Court of the United States announced its decision on the Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo case and its companion case, Relentless v. Dept. of Commerce. The majority’s opinion abolishes the rule of Chevron deference.

Today, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor Health and Human Services considered and approved its draft FY25 appropriations bill that includes increases for federal cancer research funding at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The state legislature passed its final version of the budget, which included increased funding for programs that address tobacco use.
