The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and the American Heart Association (AHA) are joining forces to support a proposed ballot initiative allowing voters to decide whether Florida should expand Medicaid. Florida Decides Healthcare, the coalition leading the signature collection efforts, is determined to collect the million signatures needed to add a question on the 2028 ballot asking voters whether the state should expand Medicaid.

This week, legislation was introduced that would create an exemption to the Clean Indoor Air Act and expand the number of businesses that allow smoking. House Bill 766 is the product of a workgroup established in 2024--without public health organization representation—to discuss whether the state should amend 18 years of precedent by issuing alcoholic beverage licenses to certain tobacco retailers and exempting these workplaces from the smoke-free law.

Gov. Kevin Stitt’s remarks requesting that the legislature pursue a roll back of Medicaid expansion threaten critical health care access for more than 250,000 Oklahomans. Medicaid expansion provides access to essential health care services like cancer screenings and preventive care. Substantively changing the program would add barriers to care for thousands of state residents, leading to economic stress and diminished health outcomes for many.
