JAMA Study Finds Tobacco Control Prevented 8 Million Deaths Since First Surgeon General 's Report on Smoking 50 Years Ago

More than 8 million premature deaths have been avoided and life expectancy has been extended for men by more than two years and for women by more than 1.5 years over the past 50 years due in large part to tobacco control efforts such as increased tobacco taxes, smoke-free air laws, marketing and sales restrictions and cessation treatment programs, according to a study released in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) today.

Great American Smokeout Emphasizes Importance of Strong Tobacco Control Laws

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) today celebrated the 34th Great American Smokeout by encouraging state and local lawmakers to protect the health of all Americans by enacting comprehensive smoke-free laws, increasing state tobacco taxes and fully funding tobacco prevention and cessation programs.

Iowa Becomes 29th State to Enact Smoke-Free Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- April 15, 2008 -- Iowa Governor Chet Culver today signed the Smokefree Air Act (HF 2212), comprehensive legislation that will eliminate smoking in non-hospitality workplaces, bars and restaurants throughout the state. The statewide law will take effect July 1, 2008.
