U.S. House - District 07
Candidate List
- Michelle Fischbach (R)
- Collin Peterson (DFL)
- Slater Johnson (LMN)
Access to Health Care
The decision on whether or not to repeal the Affordable Care Act will be decided by the Supreme Court. If it is overturned, how do you think we should protect Americans with pre-existing conditions like cancer?
Michelle Fischbach
This candidate has not yet responded to the ACS CAN questionnaire.
Collin Peterson
Although I did not support passage of the ACA, I opposed efforts to repeal it in part because of the strong protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Should the law be overturned, I would support legislation to reinstate the protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and some type subsidy to ensure that the plans are also affordable for people with cancer.

Saving Lives Through Cancer Research
Will you vote for annual increases in cancer research funding for the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute?
Michelle Fischbach
This candidate has not yet responded to the ACS CAN questionnaire.
Collin Peterson
Yes, as a cancer survivor, I have consistently supported increased appropriations for cancer research. We have made significant progress, but more work remains to find less invasive treatments and new cures. Strong and consistent federal funding for cancer research is critical to the discovery process.

Rural Health Care
Minnesotans in rural areas are often diagnosed with cancer at later stages, which have worse survivorship outcomes. They face unique challenges to cancer care, including workforce shortages, long travel distances, lack of access to specialists, insurance obstacles, and less clinical trial access. If elected, how will you address the challenges of rural cancer care?
Michelle Fischbach
This candidate has not yet responded to the ACS CAN questionnaire.
Collin Peterson
The most important thing we need to do is to protect the Critical Access Hospital program which has kept many rural hospitals open. I was part of the negotiations to institute the 101% reimbursement rate for CAHs and this has allowed rural hospitals to continue their critical mission in Western Minnesota. Detecting cancers early is key to saving lives, and that is why I support legislation that requires insurance companies to cover preventative screenings for types of cancer. I have also sponsored the Rural Hospital Frontier Workforce Fairness Act which would help rural hospitals attract and retain healthcare professionals needed to provide top quality care.

Health Equity in Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are a critical step in advancing medical research, yet one in five trials fail due to lack of participation. Common barriers to enrollment include lack of transportation, or an inability to afford lodging or take time off work. Communities of color are particularly impacted by these barriers, leading to a lack of diversity in trial participants. What policy changes would you support to address these issues?
Michelle Fischbach
This candidate has not yet responded to the ACS CAN questionnaire.
Collin Peterson
I voted for 'right to try' legislation which makes it easier for people to access new treatments in clinical trials. I have also worked with constituents with rare diseases to help push the FDA to use their authority to continue trials for people with rare and degenerative diseases. Importantly, I have asked the FDA to consider the patient's perspective when making decisions about accelerating the approval of new drugs and treatments. The FDA has missed deadlines to review treatments for rare diseases, and I have called FDA officials to urge them to keep on schedule so patients have access to potential life savings treatments.
