ACS CAN Issues Final Exam to Lawmakers

Calls on New Jersey Lawmakers to Answer Five Questions Before Adjourning for Summer

June 9, 2021

TRENTON, NJ – June 9, 2021 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) has issued a final exam to New Jersey state lawmakers and is calling on them to answer five questions before adjourning for summer and standing for election in November.

While policymakers have understandably been focused on battling the COVID-19 pandemic for much of 2021, cancer has not stopped and neither can the fight against cancer. There will be an estimated 53,000 new cancer cases and over 15,000 cancer deaths in New Jersey in 2021. Many of these cases and deaths can be avoided if state lawmakers continue their commitment to the fight against cancer. Victory in the fight against cancer requires bold new public policies that promote cancer prevention, early detection of cancer, and expanded access to quality, affordable health care.

Topics included in the final exam include funding for cancer screening, reforming step therapy, smokefree casinos, expanding access to cancer screening and  funding for tobacco control and prevention. The full exam questions are attached. The deadline for lawmakers to complete their final exam is June 30, 2021.
