More People Smoking Worldwide According to Report

Cigarette smoking and tobacco use may be down in the United States, but did you know that across the world, more people smoke now than in 1980? Emerging economies like China, India and Russia are experiencing both population growth and a rise in popularity of cigarette smoking. According to a new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, in these countries, the smoking rate itself may have even fallen, but with huge population increases, there are more smokers now than 30 years ago. For example, China had 182 million smokers in 1980 and nearly 282 million in 2012, India gained 35 million smokers in that time and Russia has one million more smokers since 1980.
