Indiana is among the least healthy states in the nation and tobacco use remains Indiana's leading health threat. The most effective way to reduce smoking rates and improve the health of Hoosiers is to increase the excise tax on cigarettes.
Increase the price of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Raising tobacco excise taxes is an effective policy solution to help counteract the toll that tobacco takes on the health of citizens and state health care expenditures. Tobacco price increases have proven to be the most effective strategy for helping smokers quit, keeping kids from starting and reducing overall consumption. We urge the Indiana General Assembly to pass a $1.50 cigarette tax increase in 2017.
