Join ACS CAN PA for a Virtual Book Club Discussion June 9th 7PM EST
We know you may be feeling a bit stir crazy by now, and likely eager to start a new chapter! With that spirit in mind, we have a fun and informative event in store!
Please join ACS CAN PA for a “Virtual Book Club” discussion June 9th 7-8PM EST. You may order the amazing book we plan to read now and use some of this time at home to start reading!
Diversity and inclusion is a very important focus for ACS CAN PA; we want to ensure all communities have access to cancer treatments, diagnostic tests and clinical trials.
Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman whose cells from her cancerous tumor over a half a century ago are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line—one of the most important cell lines that really laid much of the foundation of cancer research.
The book we ask you to read is “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. Not only will this book teach you about the inspiring life of Henrietta Lacks, it will provide background on the federal bill which ACS CAN supports, “The Henrietta Lacks Enhancing Cancer Research Act of 2019” (HR 1966/S 946).
During our virtual discussion, we'll pose discussion questions for everyone to engage in thoughtful commentary and we hope to have one of our federal lobbyists participate to answer questions you may have on the bill.
