The American Cancer Society announced today that Rosemarie Rosie Henson, senior advisor to the assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will join the Society as senior vice president for prevention and early detection, effective January 2015.

When the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law, numerous lawsuits were filed to invalidate it. After thorough consideration, ACS and ACS CAN decided to join with the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association in filing an amicus brief in federal appelate courts and at the Supreme Court of the United States to support the patient protection provisions of ACA.

In a friend-of-the-court brief filed today with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in the case of Halbig v. Burwell, leading groups fighting chronic disease argue that Congress intended for eligible consumers to receive tax credits that make health coverage purchased in either federal or state-run marketplaces more affordable.

You might already know how important it is to tell Congress to put the "Power of the Purse" behind cancer research and prevention. But not everyone helping to finish the fight against cancer knows that the U.S. Federal Government funds more cancer research than any other group, including the American Cancer Society. We need Congress to hear as many voices as possible asking them to increase funding for cancer research and prevention.
