North Carolina

More than 100 cancer patients, survivors and advocates from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) travelled to the state Capitol in Raleigh today in support of restoring funding for comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation programs as well as ensuring access to the most appropriate treatments for cancer patients.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network today released its first report examining the costs of treating cancer, and specifically patients’ out-of-pocket expenses. The report found U.S. cancer patients paid nearly $4 billion in out-of-pocket costs in 2014 and the disease cost the country $87.8 billion in cancer-related health spending.

The Lafayette Consalidated Council has introduced a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance that will make all businesses including bars smoke-free. The vote for the comprehensive smoke-free ordinance will take place on April 18th, 2017.

South Carolina

Raymond N. Dubois, MD, Ph.D., dean of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine, has been named to the national board of directors for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the advocacy affiliate for the American Cancer Society (Society). In this role, Dr. DuBois will provide leadership and guidance for ACS CAN, which supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

West Virginia

West Virginia’s Senate passed a bill that would prohibit those under 18 from using indoor tanning devices in the state. This follows the lead of the House of Delegates which overwhelming passed the bill late last month. The bill will move to the Governor this week.
