Nearly two years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its proposed rules to eliminate menthol in cigarettes and all flavors in cigars, the administration/White House announced today it will further delay release of final rules. Dr. Karen E. Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), released the following statement:

New findings led by researchers at the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) show that regional trial eligibility screening holds the promise of substantially increasing the number of patients who are found eligible to enroll in cancer clinical trials.  

The nation’s drug shortage crisis continues to affect cancer patients and survivors with 1 in every 10 (10%) reporting impacts to care, a majority of whom have had difficulties finding substitute medications (68%) and cited treatment delays (45%).  The data is part of a new survey by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

Earlier this week, 22 cancer patient and caregiver advocacy groups, including the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) offering recommendations on how the agency should consider pharmaceutical therapeutic alternatives to selected oncology drugs for 2026 Medicare plans as they head into the negotiation process laid out in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
