Colorectal cancer is the only cancer that can actually be prevented during a screening test by removing polyps before they turn into cancer. This is why it is so important for people to have insurance coverage for the full range of screening tests. In 2005, we led the successful legislative effort to require all state-regulated health plans to cover the full range of screening tests. All but one of the state’s self-insured plans, which were not affected by the law, quickly followed suit and added this coverage. But, over 10 years later, Alaska’s retired public employees still do not have coverage for screening colonoscopies. ACS CAN is championing fixing this gap for retirees through either legislation or administrative action.
