It's time to prioritize saving lives.

The Maryland General Assembly has the opportunity to overturn the veto on HB 732, which would increase tobacco taxes and fund tobacco prevention and cessation programs to prevent kids from starting to use tobacco and help adults quit.

Our elected representatives need to step up to overturn the veto on HB 732 because:

  • Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death of Maryland residents.
  • It has been more than a decade since lawmakers last increased Maryland's cigarette tax.
  • Increasing the cigarette tax by $1.75 per pack would save 12,700 lives and prevent 15,300 youth under 18 from ever becoming adult smokers.
  • The cigarette tax will generate an estimated $95.76 million in new annual revenue for the state. Revenue from the tax will also go to much needed funding for the state’s tobacco prevention and cessation program, help fund costs associated with COVID-19 in Maryland, and help pay for the Maryland Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Settlement.

I call on you to vote to override the veto of HB 732!
