Increase the NJ Tobacco Tax
143,000 young lives.
The health impact and financial toll of tobacco in our state is staggering: 11,800 New Jersey adults die each year from their own smoking. Annual health care costs directly caused by smoking are over $4 billion, including $1.17 billion in state Medicaid expenses.
And if we do nothing, 143,000 kids now under 18 and alive in New Jersey will ultimately die prematurely from smoking. Fortunately, there is something we can do. We know that raising the price of tobacco is one of the most effective ways to prevent and reduce smoking, especially among kids.
Support an increase in New Jersey's state tobacco tax to prevent kids from smoking, save lives, and reduce tobacco-related health care costs.
