$1.50 Cigarette Tax Increase Can Save Oklahoma Lives

A $1.50-per-pack cigarette tax increase will prevent 28,200 Oklahoma children from becoming smokers, prompt 30,400 adult smokers to quit, and generate $183.89 million in annual state revenue.

  • Cigarette tax increases are an essential component of tobacco control. Significantly raising the price of cigarettes and other tobacco products will reduce the number of deaths from lung and other cancers, heart attacks, strokes and other preventable diseases.
  • Each year, Oklahoma spends nearly $1.62 billion on tobacco-related healthcare costs - most of which comes directly from taxpayers through the state Medicaid program.

I call on the Oklahoma legislature to increase the tax on cigarettes a by $1.50.
